Pilots & local Families

The aerial-based research study project to observe the Southern Right Whale population as it visits the Southern Coast of our region, led by Marine Scientist Katy Fannei was only possible because of the generous and skilled support of a group of Pilots and their families from the Albany Aero Club and Albany Flying Club.

The volunteer pilots provide their time, a plane and fuel at no cost to ensure we have weekly coverage of the 450kms of coastline defined in the study. In the first season, over 13,00kms was covered, taking 77hrs in the air, which, if commercially supplied, would cost tens of thousands of dollars every season.

Because of the commitment and generosity of the local pilot community, the Little White Whale Project has been able to provide ongoing support to the Aerial Study in 2021, 2022 and now in 2023.

Campbell Transport

David Campbell Snr, a volunteer pilot and his wife Adrianne (a founding supporter), had shared our story with their son, David Campbell Jnr, in 2021. In 2022 they let him know that the Little White Whale Project intended to support a second project which would be led by Marine Scientist Masters Student Max Fabry. This research study project would take land-based observations of Southern Right Whales along the same coastline as the Aerial Study but using drones, thus being able to undertake photo identification and other significant observations of the population. However, there was a barrier to the project, being the cost and maintenance of a suitable 4WD along with fuel costs.

Having grown up near Jerramungup and establishing his trucking company there Campbell Transport owner David Campbell Jnr, is familiar with and a supporter of our natural environment and marine life.

In 2022 he generously offered to assist and contacted the Executive Committee to advise that his company would be providing a fully maintained and fuelled 4WD Toyota Prado to the Little White Whale Project to be made available for use for thier sponsored projects.

This generous donation in 2022, and now in 2023, has enabled the Little White Whale Project to provide resources to the research study project led by Max Fabry, so that he can travel to and access our remote coastline to undertake observations, filming and photography of the Southern Right Whale Population as it visits our coastline.
